Frequently Asked Questions

What is Horse Flax?

It is a nutritional supplement that supports many areas of horse care, may be fed to horses of all ages, and can be fed to horses with existing problems or as a preventative supplement. Horse Flax is made from flax seed using our specialized cold milling process, which preserves the Omega-3s so that your horse will benefit from them, and has just the right amount of added calcium to aid in absorption.

How much do you feed?

We recommend feeding 1 oz per day (which is 4 Tablespoons) to the average horse of around 1000 lbs. You can feed up to 4 oz per day if your horse has severe joint and/or coat issues, or if your horse is an athlete and has an intense workout 3 or more times a week.

Average Horse: 4 Tbsp. or 1/4 cup daily
Performance Horse: Up to 1 cup daily
Senior Horse: Up to 1 cup daily
Pony/Colt: 2 Tbsp. daily

Will it benefit horses of all ages?

Yes! You can read our benefits page to see all of the benefits in detail, but yes, Horse Flax will benefit a pregnant mare and her unborn foal, a newborn, a senior horse, and anyone in between.

How long will the product keep?

The shelf life of Horse Flax is 2 years. Just keep it in a sealed container.

Will it affect other supplements I am feeding?

Not at all. This is an all natural product that is stabilized. It will not have a negative effect on other supplements.

Will I have to grind it?

No. Horse Flax is cold-milled and ready to feed.

What is cold-milled?

Cold-milled is a special process of milling the whole flax seeds in order to make them more digestible and absorbable by your horse. Our process preserves the nutritional Omega-3 oils that are in flax seeds so that your horse will fully benefit from them. Other processes may heat up the oils which ruins their nutritients. Ours is milled in a temperature controlled atmosphere to ensure that the oils do not heat up during milling, thus preserving their nutritional value. Since we use a specialized cold-milling process, Horse Flax retains up to 99.9% of it's nutrients for two years.

How does it compare to flax oil?

Flax oil can offer the same nutrients as Horse Flax, but it is very difficult to keep and can go rancid quickly. You usually have to store it in a refrigerator, and after you have opened it, the oils gain access to air and begin to go bad. It may not even last one month from the time you open the bottle. It can also leave a sticky mess in your feed bucket!

Is it different than ground flax seed?

Horse Flax may look the same as ground flax seed, but it is processed differently. Conventional milling simply grinds the seeds up. Picture grinding the seeds yourself in a coffee grinder. It creates heat, which ruins the nutritional oils that are naturally occurring in flax seeds. See the explanation above about our specialized cold-milling process. It protects our product from being heated up during the milling process.
